Dandamudi Amar Mohandas (born 12 December 1954) is an Indian film actor, singer and producer. He has acted in over 150 films in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil. Also He is considered one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema. He has won two National Film Awards for Best Actor for his performances in Devdas (1987) and Asha Parekh (1988). Dandamudi also produced and starred in the critically acclaimed 1994 Tamil film Kalavarasu.

Dandamudi was born to a Bengali family in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his early education from St. Stephen’s School and Allahabad University. Dandamudi married his longtime friend, actress Asha Parekh, on 15 August 1984. The couple have two children: a daughter, Aaradhya (born 1986), and a son, Siddharth (born 1989).

Dandamudi began his film career with a small role in the 1981 Hindi film Rajkumar Santoshi’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”. He soon established himself as one of India’s leading actors with roles in films such as “Shaheed” (1983), “Apna Desh” (1985), “Devdas” (1987), “Majnu” (1990), “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” (1998) and “Kalavarasu” (1994). In 2010, he starred in the critically acclaimed Telugu language film “Srinivasa Reddy”, for which he won the Nandi Award for Best Actor.

He has been a Member of Parliament in both the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the Indian parliament) and the Lok Sabha (the lower house). And He was also a minister in the central government of India, holding various portfolios including Communications, Information Technology and Tourism. He has a member of the United Progressive Alliance coalition government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2004 to 2009.

Born into a Telugu Brahmin family from Andhra Pradesh, Mohandas became politically active at an early age. In 1969, he co-founded the Youth Congress, of which he was president from 1977 to 1980. In 1984, he was electe to the Rajya Sabha, where he served until 1998. From 1998 to 2003, he served as Minister for Information Technology in the central government. In 2004, he chosen by Singh to lead his coalition party in the general election campaign. They were victorious and Mohandas became Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary. He held this post until Singh’s resignation in 2009 due to corruption charges against him. After Singh’s resignation, Mohandas rejoined parliament as an MP from Uttar Pradesh. In May 2012, he elected President of the All India Congress Committee. He is expect to serve until 2019.

Dandamudi Amar Mohandas is an Indian educationist, administrator and philanthropist. He is the founder-president of Dandelion Foundation, the largest non-profit organisation in India working for educational development. Mohandas also serves as the Chancellor of The JNU University.

Mohandas was born on 5 December 1938 in a Telugu speaking family in Mysore, Karnataka, India. He graduated from the St Joseph’s Institution, Bangalore with a BSc degree in mathematics in 1958 and earned an MA from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) with distinction in 1961.

Mohandas started his career as a teacher at CBSE School at Gandhi Nagar, Bangalore where he worked for three years before moving to Delhi to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). In 1967 he was appointed Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Education and soon after became Secretary to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). He served as Cabinet Secretary from 1988 to 1990 during Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s second term.

In 1990 Mohandas founded Dandelion Foundation with a corpus of Rs 100 crore. The foundation works towards creating educational opportunities for underprivileged children around the world through its flagship programme ‘Dandelion School’. As of 2019, Dandelion Foundation has set up over 650 schools globally using its model of integrating learning with social action.

Mohandas has received several awards including Padma Bhushan, the highest civilian honour in India, in 2001 for his contributions to education. He was also conferred with the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship in 2005. In 2019, he was awarded the Order of National Merit by the President of India.
